“Grey’s Anatomy” Recap: Ya Coded

During Grey’s Anatomy‘s winter finale titled “Out of Nowhere,” Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital gets hacked. Although the doctors are able to handle anything that comes through their doors, they weren’t prepared for something like this. The episode ends with a cliffhanger that leaves the audiences on their toes for a dying boy and Jo Wilson.

Why is Everyone Dying? | When Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and April Kepner (Sarah Drew) are tending to patients, one of the monitors starts flat lining. Once they rush over to help the patient, another monitor starts to flat line. All the monitors go off at once and they realize something is wrong. A message later appears on the screens that someone has taken over the system and if they don’t receive over 4,000 bitcoins, (23 million dollars) they will delete all the medical records in the system.

The F.B.I shows up out of nowhere and tells everyone in the hospital to step away from the computers and turn off their phones. They set up their gear and get to work on who is hacking the hospital. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) gets frustrated because it’s taking too long and tells the F.B.I to work faster.

Meanwhile, Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) are taking care of a 7-year-old boy named Frankie who has a blood vessel disorder. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) and Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) have a patient named Claude who has a lung condition and try their best to help him.

Without technology, the hospital starts to fall apart. Frankie doesn’t have access to his medication, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) is doing surgery on a spleen but cannot access the blood bank. With the electricity going out, Claude’s not able to breathe properly. Bailey asks Jackson to pay the hacker for the sake of the patients. The F.B.I director advises them not to pay. If the hacker wins, they could possibly target other hospitals and more people will be in danger.

Back in the Stone Age | With the hospital’s technology down, the doctors have to do everything manually. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) gives everyone charts to write everything down by hand. April calls it “the stone age.” While April is checking a patient, she suspects that the patient is bleeding in her belly. Richard tells April that there’s a long line to get a CT and there’s no time so he asks for a newspaper. He has liquid from the patients belly in an IV bag, he states that if they can read a newspaper through the bag, there’s no blood in her stomach. April and the rest of the interns are impressed by this.

Ex Confrontation | At the end of everything, Jo is frantically trying to stop Alex from giving Frankie a blood thinner because his body won’t be able to handle it. As she’s racing over to them, she runs into her ex-husband Paul Stadler (Matthew Morrison). He calls her Brooke and then says Jo, this leaves her shocked and scared.

Will the hospital figure out who is behind the cyber attack? Is the boy going to be okay? What’s going to happen with Jo and her abusive ex-husband? We’ll have to wait until Grey’s Anatomy‘s return on Thursday, Jan 18 on ABC.
